Recent studies from the University of Oxford shows vitamin B-12 may have protective properties in older people by saving brain mass. For many years we have known that B-12 and other B vitamins can help reduce homocysteine levels. This study showed that out of 107 voluntary participants ranging in age from 61 to 87 showed significant benefit from B-12 supplementation. Researchers collected samples of blood, to measure total b-12, holo TC, methylmalonic acid, homocysteine and folic acid levels. The study ranged five years and the results showed greater brain volume loss in those individuals who had less B-12 and holo TC levels in their blood.

Researchers concluded that those with low B-12 levels are six times more likely to have brain shrinkage than those who supplement with the vitamin. On the other hand, higher levels of homocysteine levels as well as methymalonic acid and folic acid did not have any effect on brain mass size.

An additional note, depending on a person genetic make up has an affect on how b-12 is absorbed in the body. Those suffering from a genetic absorption issues do not exhibit any cognitive or mental issues due to malabsorption of B-12.
